Local Lifesavers

Empowering people to participate and strengthen their community’s chain of survival in the event of an emergency.

The Context

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) can happen to anyone, at any time, without warning. After a cardiac arrest, the likelihood of survival diminishes 10% every minute without cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Which means without CPR, a person will likely die in 10 minutes.

Medical professionals often face barriers when trying to reach a patient promptly. No advance therapy is more critical than CPR. Waiting for help to arrive will decrease the chances of survival.

San Francisco has a 14% survival rate. Seattle has a 46% success rate.

A cardiac arrest victim is twice as likely to live when bystanders give CPR; however many are reluctant to provide CPR for fear of performing the skills incorrectly, which might be harmful to the victim. CPR is essential to maximize the victim’s chance of survival.

The Challenge

Build strategic partnerships to develop free training that empowers people to participate and strengthen their community’s chain of survival in the event of an emergency.

The Solution

Local Lifesavers is an organization that empowers people to apply lifesaving skills in the event of an emergency. The organization offers basic lifesaving training led by a team of local first responders from the community. BOLT (Basic Ongoing Lifesaving Training) is a free hands-on 90-minute training in basic lifesaving skills, such as emergency assessment, how to provide CPR, use an AED, relieve choking, treat allergic reactions, and steps to control massive bleeding.

The Result

The BOLT program helps remove the fear of performing lifesaving skills incorrectly. At the end of the trainings, participants are confident and empowered to act when called upon as Good Samaritan bystanders in the event of an emergency. Since launching, Local Lifesavers has trained more than 600 people, most of whom are students and faculty.
