Let’s do it! SF
Generating excitement and social media buzz around the mundane topics of garbage and urban blight by launching the Let’s do it! SF initiative.
The Challenge
The San Francisco City Attorney wanted to increase San Franciscans’ ability to take action against illegal dumping and blight in their neighborhoods. The challenge was to find a way to raise awareness and generate excitement around the mundane topics of garbage and urban blight.
The Solution
To engage community members and potential volunteers, launch the Let’s do it! SF initiative. The initiative aims at promoting volunteerism, developing a geomap of illegally dumped trash and graffiti, and participating in the Let’s do it! World Cleanup 2012 event.
Let’s Do It! began in Estonia, where a small group of activists in 2008 were inspired by an audacious goal—to clean their entire country in just one day! The civic-led mass movement removed 11,000 tons of illegally dumped trash in just five hours.
The Result
By introducing San Franciscans to civic smartphone apps to easily and quickly report illegal dumping and graffiti, government agencies were able to prioritize city resources. The initiative built collaborative communities, stronger partnerships between government agencies and the public, and connected local efforts with the exciting global movement Let’s do it! World.
